Chun has provided an interesting solution to the Trash-Can brief, utilising part of the existing studio well. The concept is good and was easily described through the use of a working model and clear SketchUp drawings.
ReplyDeleteTo extend the model further if you had more time perhaps you could have made one of the steps in the staircase and installed the drawer into it so it showed exactly how it worked, this interface between the drawer and the step was the only thing that didn't come across clearly. This would have displayed how it would affect the current use of the staircase, if someone was using a drawer would this mean that no one would be able to walk up to level 3 via that particular route? Or would both activities be able to take place at the same time? The staircase is currently a natural wood finish and you have added more wood to it in your drawers, maybe a more contrasting finish to break up all the wood could have been more striking and create a greater attraction to potential users of you Trash-Can.
Overall the idea behind your concept of communal usability is very good, I believe the the Trash-Can concepts which allowed use from more than one student would be much more beneficial in the studio space. It was also good to see it wasn't just a piece of furniture or an object that could be placed anywhere in any building - it was designed for this studio and is an extensive installation but doesn't take away from the valuable space inside. Well done.

Chun's trash can design shows how to save space on studio and providing store fuction as well.
ReplyDeleteInstead of add something to studio, Chun found a way to redesign the srairs between lever 2 and lever 3 which will benefit the students in studio. The mail idear of his trash can is each step can have a draw under it to collect and classify design junks incluing paper, material and mock ups.
His design maks full use of space, has strong fuction and looks beautiful. But one thing should be take onto consideration is that is it convenient for people to slide out the draw under steps to put things into it.
Stech up is good and the project is well presented.

Chun's application of the trash can idea to the staircase of studio was an interesting choice and steers away from the generic 'object' form. His unique idea responds to the studio environment very well and his idea reflects an important part of the nature of design in architecture : the sharing of ideas.Chun could have thought more carefully of the significance of the placing and redistribution of ideas in his trash can.Could ideas placed in a particular spot move through the holes randomly in to different compartments? Could this contributed to a further rebirth of ideas?
ReplyDeleteOverall, the project was very well done and I particularly liked his unique approach to the brief and awareness of the practical needs of studio. Well done Chun !
